  • June 3, 2010 - Vouvray Gold Label  2008
Selected “50 Top French Wine Picks” by Sheri Sauter Morano, MW and Wines of France spokesperson, for 2010/11. What Makes This Wine Special? ”This wine from Barton & Guestier is an excellent example of an affordable and delicious Vouvray, an appellation in the Loire Valley. Made from the Chenin Blanc grape, Vouvray is, in my opinion, underappreciated for its "food-friendliness." Like Riesling, Chenin Blanc is a versatile grape that is capable of producing a wide range of styles - you can find examples that range from dry to sweet, still to sparkling. The B&G Vouvray has a bit of sweetness to it making it great for pairing with spicier dishes. But before you go thinking that this wine is going to be sweet like candy, know that Chenin Blanc is a high-acid grape. While there might be some sweetness here, the crisp acidity helps make this a refreshing and fairly light bodied wine perfect for a variety of meals.”

  • June 30, 2009 - Bistro Chardonnay  2007
Andreas Larsson - Best Sommelier of the World 2007 - about Barton & Guestier Bistro Chardonnay 2007:
"I liked this wine! Some oak, ripe yellow fruit, still balanced by some freshness on the palate."
Andreas Larsson about Vins de Pays d'Oc in general:
"This was an interesting tasting to do - I must admit that a big part of the Vins de Pays d'Oc did not really catch my attention since many of them fell into what I call the "commercial single variety" wine category. As it is always important to be open-minded, I decided to do the tasting to see what is going on and to pick out the most interesting of the wines that often pose a great quality/price ratio."

  • June 4, 2009 - French Tom Merlot (new label 2007)  2006
    **** 4 Stars - Wines of Excellence
"Aromatic and expressive on the nose—dark spiced berry fruit and toasty oak—this medium-bodied gem showers the palate with succulent flavours of cassis, pie cherry and nuances of mocha. It’s silky smooth on the delivery with a ripe tannin underpinning and nicely integrated oak—12 months in new French and American. The lengthy well-balanced finish portends versatile food-pairing with grilled red meat and spicy vegetarian included."
Drink now and over the next 5 years.

  • June 4, 2009 - French Tom Shiraz (new label 2008)  2005
*** 3 Stars - Wines well worth trying
begins with a quiet nose of mixed field berry and peppery notes. There’s a ton of fruit flavours on the palate with black juicy cherry and Damson plum mingling with hints of espresso roast and black pepper. It’s medium bodied, nicely textured and wrapped in a firm tannin structure—aerate / decant for three hours before serving to smooth them out or serve with red meat, grilled rare to medium rare. It finishes lengthy with good flavour.
Drink now and over the next 5 years.

  • May 16, 2009 - French Tom Merlot (new label 2007)  -
... This being a wine column and this being a weekend that cries out for a good barbecue, I'd like to mention two brand new red wines on LCBO shelves -- so new in fact they're just now being released and you may have to go hunting for a week or so. But they're very tasty and good value, and there's a long summer of grilling ahead.
The wines are FRENCH TOM SHIRAZ and FRENCH TOM MERLOT. Now, you might look at the portrait on the label and assume "OK, they're drawing on the Thomas Jefferson and love of wine thing," but in fact French Tom refers to Thomas Barton, an Irishman who moved to Bordeaux in the 1700s and began Barton & Guestier, still one of the biggest wine houses in France.
French Tom wines themselves are out of the Languedoc region in southern France, and are both single varietals. French Tom Shiraz is dark purple/red in colour, and shows nice, round cherry and plum fruit flavours with a characteristic touch of black pepper and spice. French Tom Merlot is garnet red and a little lighter in texture, with a toasty edge and flavours of black raspberries, red currants, mulberries and dark chocolate.

  • April 2009 - Bistro Chardonnay  2006
Longtime wine writer Nick Passmore gives B&G Bistro Chardonnay an outstanding 5 stars in his BusinessWeek online column. Though he does not appreciate our label, he more than appreciates what is inside the bottle.
    Bad Label, Good Wine
B&G's Bistro Wine Chardonnay sells for only $9 a bottle but tastes like it costs a lot more. Just try to overlook the label
I normally avoid wines with hokey labels or overly cute names—it seems like a sure invitation to hangover. But, in spite of violating both of these conditions, Bistro Wine Chardonnay is a surprisingly good wine. The offending label in question depicts two beret-adorned Frenchmen imbibing in front of a café. At least, thank goodness, one of them doesn't have a baguette or any other seemingly unavoidable French cliché, clutched under his arm. But try to ignore it. This offering comes from an organization, Barton & Gustier (B&G), that enjoys a long and well-deserved reputation for producing very decent value wines.
To anyone with a passing acquaintance with Bordeaux, the name Barton should be familiar. They are one of those Franco-Irish families that have been involved in the wine and cognac trade between the west coast of France and England and Ireland since the 18th century—think of Lynch, as in Lynch-Barges, and Hennessey.
Thomas Barton of Curraghmore, Ireland, founded the négociant house Barton and Guestier in 1725 and the business remained in the family until 1986 when control passed to Joseph E. Seagram & Sons. It was subsequently absorbed by the British drinks conglomerate Diageo (DEO) in 2001, though Anthony Barton still owns Ch. Léoville-Barton in St-Julien.
    Earthy, Flinty Minerality
Here B&G has crafted a terrific value white, the Bistro Wine Chardonnay 2006 ($9) from the Languedoc in southwest France. People have been predicting good things from this vast region for years but it has rarely lived up to expectation. The Bistro Wine Chardonnay, however, is an exception. No new-world oak bomb here, but a charming chardonnay that's packed with an earthy, flinty minerality. I never would have believed that I would use the term "elegant" to describe a $9 wine, but here it is appropriate.
On consideration, it occurs to me that perhaps I am being too harsh about the name and label. It is the sort of marketing ploy that will put off the wine aficionado but should attract the more casual drinker, and that's unfortunate … for the aficionado, of course, because he or she will be missing out on a good thing. So, if the two caricature Français, replete with their black berets, can help sell this terrific wine, good luck to them!

"This is Barton & Guestier’s home vineyard and, in 2006, it has produced a finely crafted wine. The balance is all there, with ripe red berry fruits and cranberry juice adding to the firm, dark core of tannins. It is worth aging for two to three years but is certainly drinkable now."

This delicious 50-50 blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon displays a dark ruby color with aromas of sweet fruit, vanilla, dill and herbs. On the palate it exhibits a very soft lush attack with ripe plum and herbs and prominent oak flavors on the finish.

"True traditionalists will probably insist on drinking Bordeaux with their turkey. If so, they could do worse than trying the latest offering in the Thomas Barton range. Decant an hour or so beforehand to smooth out the tannins, allowing the flavours of blackcurrant, mint and tobacco to develop further. Impressive wine from one of the great vintages in Bordeaux."

2005 Barton & Guestier "Bistro Wine'' Pinot Noir, Vin de Pays d'Oc, France, about $9. Simple and unpretentious, yet distinctly French, this wine completely lives up to its name. The fruit is restrained, the texture is soft and there's a smidgen of that ethereal Sideways character lurking in the bottle. Try it with braised lamb shanks or roasted chicken.

This is the one we most often see at supermarkets. That's a good thing because it's always a great deal. The nose alone is vibrand and filled with minerals, passion fruit and kiwi. ...The 2003 Barton & Guestier Beaujolais ($9) is a lesson both in the virtues of patience and the vagaries of nature... Its aromas are typically Beaujolais: primarily floral, with some Concord grape, earth, soy sauce and mushroom. On the palate, the wine is light and unusually fruity, with flavors of Concord grape and red plum, floral notes and hints of soy sauce. Unlike heavier reds, this very pleasant wine would be good chilled on an Indian summer afternoon. Its light body and relatively low alcohol (12.5 percent) make it a good choice when you're having traditionally white-wine food (white-flesh fish or shellfish) but want a red wine...

    WINE OF THE WEEK
This vintage of the B&G Beaujolais has unsually ripe fruit, along with the light body and floral aromas we expect from Beaujolais. Its primary flavors are Concord grape and red plum with hints of soy sauce and floral notes. It's very pleasant slightly chilled, to about 60 degrees, and quaffed outside on a warm day. Or, serve it at cellar temperature (65 degrees) with dinner. The light body and relatively low alcohol (12.5 percent) make it an excellent match with all kinds of food — even foods you normally wouldn't have with red wine, such as shellfish (mussels with fried potatoes would be great) or white-flesh fish. If you haven't tried Beaujolais wines before, the unusual 2003 vintage is an easy introduction.

  • October 20, 2005 - Côtes-du-Rhône Gold Label  2003
"A big wine by French standards, perhaps owing to the incredible heat of the vintage of 2003. Composed mostly of Grenache grapes (50%) this southern Rhone wine also includes Carignan (30%) and Syrah (20%). Lighter in body than most Rhone-style wines from California, it nevertheless delivers quite enough blackberry and plum character fruit in a balanced package. Some black pepper in the nose and in the flavor profile, as well as some spice and herbal notes in the background. An excellent experience at less than ten dollars - how often can one say that these days?"

"Might be an eye-opener for folks who have not had a Chenin Blanc in some years. Shows a nice bouquet preceding flavors of apple and melon. This sprightly wine from the Loire Valley does have a slight sweetness, but it is entirely appropriate and integrated. Would work with some lighter main courses, but we suggest you try as an aperitif in lieu of all-too-big California Chardonnays."

...Chenin Blanc is another perfect summer grape. In its home in France's Loire region, it is responsible for some of the world's best, and most age-worthy, sweet white wines because its high natural acidity provides a thrilling counterpoint ot its inherent honey flavor. The 2003 Barton & Guestier Chardonnay (9 $) is an affordable peek at the style. Its flavors and aromas of honey and candied lemon peel have an appealing mineral backdrop...

"Reds that hit the spot with barbecue and meats hot off the grill range from lighter styles to full-blown heavy hitters. The 2002 Barton & Guestier Cotes-Du-Rhone ($9) belongs in the lighter category. A blend of traditional Rhone varieties such as Grenache, Syrah and Carignane, this light and spicy red from the south of France tastes even better with a little chill. Put it in the refrigerator for 10 minutes or so and uncork it with fleshy, oily fish like salmon or grilled Portobello mushroom sandwiches."

  • January 6, 2005 - Châteauneuf-du-Pape Gold Label  2002
"This wine, from the famous appellation in the Southern Rhone, is primarily Grenache (75%),a variety known to Americans more for rose bottlings of a generation ago, with a quarter of its composition from the more familiar Syrah. There’s nothing pallid about this wine. It's full of dark fruit character with plenty of pepper and spice."

  • Winter 2002/2003 - French Tom Merlot  2000
”For us, B&G’s most impressive wine was its Merlot Premium 2000 showing superior quality and more opulence than any B&G of its kind we have tasted. The aroma exudes oak, rich jammy blackberry and plum notes, with soft spices of nutmeg and cinnamon; the flavors show more of the same, with a soft texture and mature fruit and fairly long finish.”

Thanksgiving Wines "... a bright and pleasant ruby red color and an aroma that offers cherry and spice with hints of licorice and tar. The flavor cradles berries, black pepper and mushrooms in the background. While this is a dry wine and will not do too well with the sweet side dishes of a turkey or ham dinner, it will go well with the traditional beef dishes."

  • November 22, 2001 - Vouvray Gold Label  2000
Thanksgiving Wines "... a semi-sweet wine, that is to say it is not dry and therefore can well accompany any sweet side dishes or condiment. The aroma is big and obvious, stressing melon, citrus and summer wildflowers. On the palate there is an excellent balance between the fruit flavors and the fruit acid. The most obvious fruit flavors are those of fig and pear with a hint of nectarine in the background. The finish is more than acceptably long and very fruity. For turkey, ham or any of the other popular foods for thankgiving, this wine can be the perfect accompaniment and will garner the host many compliments on their choice."

Today's Recommended Wine "If this wine were produced in America, it probably would be called White Cabernet. It's not sweet, but it's not totally dry either, which gives it a lot of appeal. It has lovely red berry aromas, is crisp and clean on the palate and would make an ideal wine with American holiday dinners starring turkey, ham, or roast pork loin, or you could simply serve it as an aperitif."

Today's Recommended Wine "This famous old wine company, which has shipped wines from France since the 1700s, can be relied on for high-quality, modest-priced varietal selections that come from Bordeaux and the south of France. This Sauvignon Blanc reflects its origin in the Languedoc region -- tropical fruit flavors that are crisp and round, making it a perfect match with shellfish. What's great is that you can usually find B&G wines in high-volume stores such as supermarkets. For whites, look for vintages that are no more than 2-3 years old. Don't worry about the vintages for the reds."

You might not expect one of the greatest sources of value-priced wine to be located in Bordeaux, but that's where Barton & Guestier is headquartered. WINE OF THE WEEK "We have come to take for granted the exceptional value for money represented by wines that come to us from vineyards in the Pays d'Oc region of southern France. In particular, the merlot grape, usually associated with Bordeaux, has thrived in this intensely sunny climate. In 1998, however, the weather did not cooperate. Spring frost was followed by prolonged drought. But some of the merlot plantings managed to produce small number of intensely fruity wines, among them this from the firm of Barton & Guestier, better know as B&G. There's an accent of anise under fruit flavors of cherry and blackberry, while soft tannins allow current drinking of this still-young wine. Pair it with rich food such as roast beef or osso buco."

"B&G produces a broad line of both appellation-designated and affordable varietal wines, which are commonly found in supermarkets. Being so commercial they may not appeal to wine snobs, but even they could not deny the clean taste and honest varietal character you get for the money. This Vouvray, and please note the vintage, is a lovely, white wine made from Chenin Blanc, grown in France's Loire Valley. It smells like an orchid and has a touch of sweetness in the taste. As an aperitif or a wine to serve with spicy Asian fare, it would be grand."

The B&G wine, made from a difficult vintage, is 90% Grenache and 10% Syrah, both fermented together. It has nice body, with a nose of ripe fruit and flowers. "Typical of many Crus Bourgeois, Château Magnol, the gateway to the Medoc, is separated from the Graves by a tributary of the Gironde estuary, known as the Jalle de Blanquefort. Its 17 hectare vineyard, the most southerly in the Medoc, surrounds the Chartreuse, an attractive single-storey manor house. Having tasted vintages of Château Magnol from 1982, I was most impressed by the level of quality of the recent vintages. Under the guidance of winemaker Guy Sarton du Jonchay, who worked several years in South America, the wines have changed in style, and have become more consumer friendly whilst still respecting tradition and terroir. They also represent excellent value for money."
